Mothers Day brunch

Updated: May 6, 2019

I cannot wait for a peaceful restful Mother's Day. The last few weeks have been at a fever pitch here at the Farmette. The new Farmette stand is complete thanks to the tireless work of my Dad. We had a great time working together to build the rickshaw-style mobile stand and it is filled with eggs for sale right now at the end of the driveway. No sooner did we finish, my sister Megan showed up to help me with my booth at the Central Middle School Cobra-Rockin' Rush and Davidsonville Athletic Association Gator Day BOTH last Saturday! Wheww! In the meantime, the gardens are growing and I am swinging into full gear with tons of offerings for your Mothers Day festivities next weekend.

Mother's Day Spring bouquets for Friday pick-up

Lots more to choose from in the way of salad and greens this week and one of my favorites, French breakfast radish!!! My friend Marina shared a recipe for radish butter that I plan to try out this week. https://thefeedfeed.com/video/how-to-make-radish-butter Give it a whirl and if it's great, please share your results with me or Instagram @fairytalefarmette or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/fairytalefarmette/

The very first crop from the new field across the street from the Farmette is ready this week. Welcome arugula!!! I also have limited quantities of kale and spinach this week as well if you are serving Mom breakfast in bed try this green smoothie recipe, works just as well with spinach if you prefer.

Pineapple Banana Baby Kale Smoothie

  • 1/2 cups baby kale

  • 1/2 cup almond milk

  • 1/2 cup orange juice

  • 1 cups chopped frozen pineapple

  • 1 frozen banana

  • Juice of 1/2 lime

  • 1 tablespoons chia seeds

Place all ingredient is the blender, blend until smooth.

Variations:

Ginger Mango, substitute the pineapple for cubed frozen mango and the chia seeds for 2 TBS of peeled and cubed ginger root.

Apple Kiwi, substitute the pineapple for 1 Granny smith apple peeled and cubed, 1/2 fresh Kiwi and 1/2 cup frozen Mango. Omit the chia seeds, it is too “seedy” with the kiwi seeds.

Matcha, substitute the chia seeds with 1 TBS matcha powder. Both pineapple and mango work well in this version.

Avocado, Reduce the pineapple to 1/2 cup and add 1/2 a fresh avocado. Skip the lime and chia and add a TBS of honey. This one is super creamy! Mmmm!

A tips for a better green smoothie, experiment but... not with berries! When you combined red, blue and purple fruits with greens the color is NOT appetizing. To keep the color green, stick with green, yellow, orange, and white fleshed fruits.

Herbs continue to grow stay tuned for more varieties coming in the next few weeks. I'm looking forward to offering Basil again this year, I have flats of plugs in the greenhouse hopefully going in the ground this week. The Farmette hens continue to be very productive so I have plenty of Large eggs available. I will leave the brand new stand open for eggs all week, as there are lots available. The new hens are starting to lay "mediums" so the last of the "smalls" and "pee wee" pullet eggs are still available for a limited time. The pullet eggs (small and pee-wee) are only $4/dozen, so if you don't have correct change when you stop, feel free to use your smart phone to pay online.

I will have the mini-head lettuce again this week, you can use it as an edible centerpiece for your table it's so pretty! The stand will be open on Mother's Day for those of you that procrastinate (no judgment here I can be counted as one of those) but be sure to pre-order the greens, especially kale and spinach because I have pretty limited quantities this week. Happy Mothers Day!!!
